“By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another” (v35). Jesus knew that his hour of death was approaching (v1), and so he left his disciples with a last teaching. To be his followers, we must love as he loved – humbly, sacrificially, generously - going beyond the natural love within families, marriages, and friendship. Jesus, “Lord and Teacher” (v14), washed his disciples’ feet as a display of extraordinary love. This is our commandment (v34, I John 3:23).
We can’t generate this kind of divine love on our own. “Love is from God” (I John 5:7), first filling our hearts and minds, and then overflowing to those around us.
