“But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain you; how much less this house that I have built!” (8:27). Solomon knew that the Creator could not be contained in a Temple, no matter how big and beautiful. But the Temple was where the Israelites could come to worship God, and he graciously filled it with his glory (8:11).
The Temple could not contain God, but he chose to meet his people there, because he wants men and women to know him. Despite our sin, God does “forgive and act,” (v39), as Solomon prayed, and he loved us enough to come and dwell among us.
