“Make haste, O God, to deliver me! O LORD, make haste to help me!” (v1). Just like us, sometimes the psalmist did not have time for long, poetic prayers. Sometimes all that could be said was, “Help!” In desperation, in danger (v2), the psalmist expressed the same feeling as the ancient Christian prayer: “Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me.” His need was not just serious, it was urgent; in this short prayer, the psalmist calls on God four times to intervene “right now.”
God is merciful and compassionate. No matter what is happening, we can affirm the truth that saves us – we are “poor and needy,” and God is our “help and deliverer” (v5).
