“For you, my God, have revealed to your servant that you will build a house for him” (17:25). When King David wanted to build a “house” (a Temple) for the ark of God, God instead gave him a new promise: that God would build a “house” – a dynasty – for David. Just as God had chosen Israel and made them His own, He was now choosing David’s family and promising them a significant future (v23-24). The focus was not on David’s work, but on God’s promises.
In God’s hands, David’s short-lived earthly kingdom produced eternal glory through his descendant, the Messiah Jesus. Alive in Him, our ordinary efforts also find a place in His eternal, redemptive purposes.
