“And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of unrighteous wealth, so that when it fails they may receive you into the eternal dwellings” (v9). Jesus told this strange story about a corrupt manager who, when he was about to be fired, quickly “made friends for himself” by illegally reducing his customers’ debts. The manager was “shrewd” (v8) because he did what was necessary to survive. Jesus told his listeners that earthly wealth will inevitably “fail,” so we should spend it in light of our eternal future.
Jesus calls us to live wisely, investing our energies in our true home - His unshakable kingdom (Hebrews 12:28).
