“But to the tribe of Levi Moses gave no inheritance; the LORD God of Israel is their inheritance” (13:33). Every tribe received an allotment of land in Canaan, except for the Levites. They lived on the offerings and sacrifices of the people (13:14) and represented the people before God. The Levites pointed toward the relationship God wanted to have with all His children, a relationship achieved by our identification with our perfect High Priest, Jesus. Through Him, we are all “a royal priesthood” (I Peter 1:9).
The early churches had no sacred “priests,” only ordinary leaders. By his sacrifice, Jesus our High Priest makes us holy and invites us into the Father’s presence.
