“But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth” (v23). Jesus’ encounter with the Samaritan woman shows us that he understands us and meets us wherever we are; he acknowledged this woman’s unique circumstances and spoke kindly to her. Jesus then said that what she was looking for was “now here"; the Messiah had arrived. “I am he.” Jesus was compassionate about her old life, but he urged her to embrace a new life “in spirit and truth.”
Because he loves us, Jesus challenges us to stop seeking satisfaction in places that lead to death, and to receive the water of life that quenches every thirst.
