"The LORD our God we will serve, and his voice we will obey" (24:24). Joshua, as he was dying, called on the Israelites to reaffirm their covenant with the Lord. They had been given land, farms, and houses as God’s gifts – not earned, not conquered by their own strength (v13) – and now Joshua urged them to declare their loyalty to the Lord. God’s favor was on them, but they could also choose to turn away and serve idols, leading to their own destruction (v14).
The familiar idols of our own culture tempt us to compromise our loyalty to God. He saved us by His grace, and His Spirit helps us withstand temptation and choose obedience.
