“Blessed be your discretion, and blessed be you, who have kept me this day from bloodguilt and from working salvation with my own hand!” (25:33). David and his men had treated Nabal’s shepherds very well, but now that David’s men needed supplies, Nabal dismissed them rudely. According to ancient honor codes, David and his men might have been “justified” in attacking Nabal. Yet Abigail’s discretion prevailed; her words prevented disaster and bloodshed.
Discretion, or wisdom, often means using self-control for the sake of a better future (Prov 24:3). Rather than letting momentary emotions rule us and sabotage our lives, God calls us to seek His wisdom (James 1).
