“Have I any pleasure in the death of the wicked … and not rather that he should turn from his way and live?” (18:23). After comparing the wicked Israelites to an adulterous bride (ch 16), God declared that He was calling everyone to repentance. The Israelites worshipped idols and embraced sexual sin and even child sacrifice; yet, God invited them, “Cast away from you all the transgressions that you have committed, and make yourselves a new heart and a new spirit!” (18:31).
“For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone … so turn, and live” (18:32). God does not enjoy seeing the consequences of sin; His desire for all people is new life.
