“What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him?” (2:14). James agreed with Paul that faith in Christ comes first; however, James emphasized that real faith is naturally “completed” by our works (2:22). The authenticity of our faith-based relationship with Christ is revealed by changed behavior (v18). As we receive mercy, we begin to show mercy: treating people with kindness, and being generous the way God is generous with us (v13-15).
“For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead” (2:26). A living, active faith will inevitably be revealed in transformed attitudes and behavior.
