“Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent” (3:19). John’s “revelations” were God’s gift to the struggling churches of Asia, calling them to repentance and encouraging them through truth embedded in colorful visions. The churches faced two main dangers: persecution from the outside (1:9, 2:10) and sinful behavior among believers (2:14, 2:20). Fighting against these had led to weariness, lukewarm faith in some cases, and a body without life in others (3:1).
John encouraged the believers to have “patient endurance” through their trials, trusting in Jesus “who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood and made us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father” (1:5-6).
