“But you are a God ready to forgive, gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love” (9:17). When the wall was completed, Nehemiah the governor and Ezra the priest gathered the people together for a holy celebration. Every day, Ezra read from God’s Word, and the Levites helped people to understand (8:8). By re-telling the story of Israel (ch 9) - God’s promises, slavery in Egypt, the Red Sea, the manna, Mount Sinai and the Law, and the Promised Land - the returned exiles learned what their God was like.
“You are a gracious and merciful God” (v31). Never abstract, God’s love was perfectly made flesh in Jesus Christ (Col 1:15).
