“He has walled up my way, so that I cannot pass, and he has set darkness upon my paths” (19:8). For Job, there was no escape from suffering. He lost his friends, his family, his reputation, and his health. His own wife turned against him (v17), and his “wise friends” tormented him with criticism and judgment instead of comfort (19:2). Job’s only “listener” was God, even though He did not immediately answer.
“For I know that my Redeemer lives … I shall see God” (19:25). When everything had been taken away, Job was left with one unshakeable truth: God lives, and one day we will see Him.
