“Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean; remove the evil of your deeds from before my eyes; cease to do evil, learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow's cause” (1:16-17). God declared that the Israelites’ prayers and sacrifices were worthless because their hands were “full of blood” (v15). Isaiah’s prophetic message called them to stop going through empty rituals of religion (v14) and instead to honor God by showing mercy and seeking justice.
“Bring no more vain offerings” (v16). Our offerings are worthless unless we also honor God in our hearts and by our actions. Loving God includes loving our neighbors, especially the most vulnerable.
