“Why do you provoke me to anger with the works of your hands, making offerings to other gods in the land of Egypt where you have come to live …?” (44:8). Even though offering sacrifices to idols was what destroyed Judah, the Israelites who fled to Egypt continued to do it. They made cakes for “the queen of heaven” and called on false gods to help them (v17). They refused to believe that the God of Abraham, the One God, was their only salvation.
“Oh, do not do this abomination that I hate!” (44:4). Like the Israelites, worshipping the false gods of our society – physical beauty, success, health, fame, etc. – enslaves us. Christ alone offers salvation and freedom.
