“Gladness and joy have been taken away from the fruitful land of Moab … the shouting is not the shout of joy” (v33). Israel wasn’t the only nation called to worship God in Old Testament times. The whole world, including Moab and the Philistines (ch 47), was intended to be full of “gladness and joy” and the fruitfulness that comes from living in harmony with our Creator. This was lost because “you trusted in your works and your treasures,” declared Jeremiah. (48:7).
“Yet I will restore the fortunes of Moab in the latter days” (48:47). God’s desire is to rescue the whole world through Christ, restoring to us the “gladness and joy” of life in His kingdom.
