“Abram settled in the land of Canaan, while Lot settled among the cities of the valley” (13:12). God’s promise to Abram was to do something new and unique with his family, to make Abram’s descendants their own great nation. Therefore, while Lot moved into an existing city, Abram remained a nomad. When he got involved in the battle of Canaanite kings, he refused to take any riches, (14:23), so that no one but God would get glory (14:23).
Abram was “looking for a city … whose designer and builder is God” (Heb 11:10). God calls us to choose Him exclusively, rejecting sin in order to fully embrace what He promises.
