“No one had the strength to subdue him” (5:4). The demon-possessed man had broken all the chains meant to subdue him; the demonic power seemed unconquerable. In the same way, the sick woman had spent all her money and was desperate; no one could help her (5:26). Jesus cast out the demons and healed the woman, and he raised Jairus’ daughter from the dead (5:42). In fact, the only place he could “do no mighty work” was his hometown, where they had low expectations of him (6:3-5).
Our expectations of Jesus can’t be too high, only too low. When we come to him in faith, no matter how insurmountable the problem, he says, “Do not be afraid” (6:50).
