“And Jonathan, Saul's son, rose and went to David at Horesh, and strengthened his hand in God” (v16). Many of the psalms come from this time in David’s life, when he was hiding in caves with his fugitive band and running from Saul. Saul had the authority of the crown, resources, spies and warriors at his disposal, while David had his 400 outcasts and no shelter (ch 22). However, he was encouraged his by faithful friend Jonathan, who spoke words of truth “in God” and told him not to fear (v17).
“Therefore that place was called the Rock of Escape” (v28). Like David, we learn during our darkest moments that God is the Rock of Escape who won’t fail us.
