“For as his share is who goes down into the battle, so shall his share be who stays by the baggage” (v24). When David’s army set out to pursue the Amalekite raiders, half of the Israelite warriors were too exhausted to fight and stayed behind to protect the baggage (v10). After the victory, “wicked and worthless fellows” suggested that only those who actively fought should receive the spoils (v21); David rejected this idea and shared the loot equally.
“You shall not do so, my brothers, with what the LORD has given us” (v23). Greed and pride are the result of thinking that we accomplish things without help. When we recognize God’s mercy to us, we willingly share with others.
