“For he delivers the needy when he calls, the poor and him who has no helper” (v12). This royal psalm calls for Israel’s king to be victorious over enemies and the defender of poor and vulnerable citizens (v2, 4, 12-14). The psalmist prays that under this righteous king who “has pity on the weak and the needy” (v13), the land will flow with abundance and peace, and his rule will be “like showers that water the earth” (v6).
“May people be blessed in him, all nations call him blessed!” (v17). We rejoice that we are citizens of the true King of the earth, the righteous One who defends the needy and calls us to share His heart.
