“Paul has persuaded and turned away a great many people, saying that gods made with hands are not gods” (v26). The early Christians rejected all kinds of idolatry and declared “Jesus is Lord.” This meant that Jesus was their highest authority – not any other religion, not the Roman government, not themselves, and not their work or money (v25). Demetrius of Ephesus rightly concluded that if more people believed in Jesus, their trade and the pagan temple would collapse (v27).
“And the name of the Lord Jesus was extolled” (v17). “Jesus is Lord” means that everything in our lives -even our families and work and resources – comes under His loving authority.
