“The descendants of Jehoiakim: Jeconiah his son, Zedekiah his son; and the sons of Jeconiah, the captive …” (v16-17). II Kings 25 tells us that Zedekiah was the last king of the independent nation of Judah (southern Israel). In his lifetime, the Babylonians conquered Jerusalem and took nearly everyone into exile. But Chronicles reports that the royal line of David survived, because children were born to the family while in Babylonian captivity. Despite the destruction of Jerusalem and its Temple, God’s plan continued, and eventually God’s people returned to Judah.
Failure and loss make it seem like the enemy has won. But God can set us free from bondage, bring us out of exile, and give us hope and a future.
