II Kings 17

“So they feared the LORD but also served their own gods …” (v33).  After many years of breaking God’s covenant, worshipping idols and even practicing child sacrifice, northern Israel was conquered by the Assyrians. Most people were exiled, but the Assyrians invited certain priests to teach them “Israelite ways” (v27).  However, they never gave up idolatry, but simply mixed all kinds of worship.
“You shall not [worship] other gods …” (v35-41).  We can’t follow God and also serve the idols of power, wealth, or sexuality or look elsewhere for help.  God calls us to serve, love, and trust Him with our whole hearts.
