“In all Israel there were 1,100,000 men who drew the sword, and in Judah 470,000 who drew the sword” (v5). King David wanted to evaluate Israel’s military strength, but this displeased the Lord, as the general Joab knew (v7). God Himself had rescued Israel numerous times and had promised to defend and support them; they were God’s people, and they never won battles by their own strategy or superior weapons. Counting the soldiers was a sign of mistrust in the Lord.
“Let me fall into the hand of the Lord” (v13). God’s people can’t afford to put their trust in worldly power. God is our Savior, defender, and judge; He is all we need.
