“Here comes that dreamer!” they said to each other. “Come now, let’s kill him …” (37:19-20). As always, the greatest threat to the future of God’s people in the Promised Land was not their enemies, but their own sinful choices. Joseph, openly favored by his father, tattled on his brothers and bragged about his dreams. His brothers hated him enough to kill him, and they ended up selling him into slavery. Reuben wanted no part in these schemes but could not stop them.

“Jacob lived in the land where his father had stayed, the land of Canaan” (37:1). Canaan was still full of promise, despite Abraham’s troublesome descendants. God’s redemptive work does not flow from our righteousness, but from his loving faithfulness.
