God’s judgment against sin in the day of the Lord is like a terrible locust invasion that can turn a “garden of Eden” into a “desert waste”; “nothing escapes” his judgement (2:3). Joel’s prophecies demonstrate that God takes sin seriously. The only right response is to wholeheartedly repent of our sin and to “rend our hearts” (2:13).
But the good news of the gospel is that he is also “gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love” (2:13). When we “return to the Lord,” he forgives us and fill us with all good things (2:18-19). Repentance of sin is the path to God’s blessing and the joyful restoration of our lives (2:25).
