“The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!” (15). The Jewish people had been taught for centuries about God’s reign; it included righteousness, justice, and God’s design for the world being accomplished. Jesus boldly proclaimed that God’s kingdom had “come near” in him. He taught “with authority”, he healed the sick, and he cast out demons. The rule of God, surprisingly, had come near in a Person, and individuals like Simon, Andrew, James and John (16-19) dropped everything to follow him.

“Come, follow Me” (17). We are not called to a set of values or morals, but to follow a Person. Jesus shows us what God’s kingdom looks like and leads us in.
