“And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition?” (3). The Pharisees, conservative Jewish leaders concerned for traditional religion, ignored the heart of God revealed in his commands. They encouraged people to dedicate offerings to the Temple even when it made them unable to care for their elderly parents (5-6). They were concerned about ritual purity (10-14) but ignored sins that came from unclean hearts (19).

“I have compassion for these people” (32). God’s commands flow from his deep love and concern for us. More than appearances, he wants to cleanse and renew our hearts.
