‘When you cross the Jordan into Canaan ...destroy all their carved images and their cast idols and demolish all their high places” (33:51-52). God’s rescue of the Israelites had a purpose: he wanted a people who would obey him and reflect him in the world. The Israelites left behind Egypt, where the Lord had “brought judgment” on false gods (33:4); their goal was the Promised Land, where they could live righteously as God’s people. God warned them that if instead they adopted the Canaanites’ sinful ways, they would also face judgment (33:36).
“When you enter Canaan ...” (34:1). We have been rescued from sin so that we can live as God’s people, obediently and joyfully, in this world and the next.
