“If it had not been the LORD who was on our side … then the flood would have swept us away” (v1-4). The psalmist looked back over his life and saw God’s hand of mercy. Rather than looking back with regret, or blame, or pride in his own accomplishments, he saw that God had been on his side and on the side of Israel, His beloved people. Disasters and enemy plans could not ultimately imprison them; “the snare is broken, and we have escaped” (v7).
“Our help is in the name of the Lord” (v8). When we open our eyes to His mercy, we see that the God of heaven and earth has been on our side all along.
